MailChimp and Atlanta Freedom Bands present "Color Our World: Life, Spirit, Magic!"
Join us for a concert gala featuring over 200 musicians from 32 different LGBT bands in the Lesbian and Gay Band Association. The Ferst Center will ring with the latest in symphonic wind band music, including the world premiere of "Colors: A Celebration!" from Atlanta composer Tim Jansa, specially commissioned for this event. Atlanta author and playwright Topher Payne will be the special guest host for the evening.
"This will be the largest number of LGBT bands assembled in one place at the same time," remarked AFB President Cliff Norris. "The Atlanta Pride Festival was the natural time to bring them all to our city. Our concert audience will have the rare opportunities to hear both a wind symphony of this size and the world premiere of a new work."
The concert takes place at the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech. Tickets are $30 for general admission, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and include free parking in the Student Center Parking Deck.
The concert has music inspired by the meanings behind the original 8-color rainbow flag, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. The concert program includes:
Opener: "Skysplitter!" by V. Oppido
Red - Life: "Promise of Living" by Aaron Copland, arr. Curnow
Orange - Healing: "Sure on This Shining Night" by Samuel Barber
Yellow - Sunlight: "Sun Dance" by Frank Ticheli
Green - Nature: "In Nature's Glory" by Brian Balmadges
Turquoise - Magic: "Selections from Wicked" by Stephen Schwartz
Indigo - Serenity: "October" by Eric Whitacre
Violet - Human Spirit: "Joy" by Joseph Curiale
Hot Pink - Sexuality: "Big Band Tribute" by John Wasson
Premiere: "Colors: A Celebration" by Tim Jansa
The concert artistic team includes Dr. Kathleen Nicole Fallin, AFB's Artistic Director; Mr. Kurt Wackerly, AFB's Associate Director; and guest conductors Dr. John Lynch, Director of Bands at the University of Georgia and Mr. Brian Worsdale, Artistic Director of French Woods Festival for the Performing Arts.
The concert is presented with support from MailChimp, the title sponsor of the 2013 LGBA international conference. The concert is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia Council for the Arts also receives support from its partner agency - the National Endowment for the Arts. Funding for this program is also provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council. AFB is also proud to present this program as a community partner with the Atlanta Pride Committee.
